Asbestos has been identified as the single biggest industrial disease. It is classified as a Class 1 carcinogen and currently, in the UK, it accounts for more than 5000 deaths per year. It is widely predicted that the figure will rise to around 10,000 deaths per year in the UK alone. It is expected that the deaths from asbestos related diseases will peak between 2010 & 2020.
Why is there so much emphasis on training? The Health and Safety Executive are vigorously trying to prevent further exposure to asbestos and so prevent future deaths.
It is now widely recognised that the key to prevent future exposure lies with managing asbestos and increasing the general awareness of the problem amongst the next target group, those involved in maintenance etc. A survey by the Health & Safety Commission identified approximately 1.8 million people who are liable to disturb asbestos on a regular basis via their routine work activities.
